Advice on Living by the Divine Willy

“Action is eloquence.”

Grand Canyon

Between
should have

and could have
lies a Grand Canyon

full of didn’t.

Making Sense

Buying stocks on margin
or distilling oil from tar sands

must make sense
when you are doing it,

like building golf courses in the desert
and mining ground water to keep them green.

The places in Ethiopia
where some of our earliest ancestors lived
are now an uninhabitable moonscape.

No one knows for sure why.
But whatever it was
I bet it made sense at the time.

We Ain’t Going Back

From the commemoration today of the 1963 march on Washington and Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech:

“We ain’t going back. We ain’t going back. We’ve come too far, marched too long, prayed too hard, wept too bitterly, bled too profusely and died too young to let anybody turn back the clock on our journey to justice.”

–Dr. Joseph Lowery, American civil rights leader, Methodist minister, lead the Selma to Montgomery march at the request of Martin Luther King.

Only In Portland #37

A guy riding a beautiful vintage two-tone Vespa. He has a courier bag around his shoulders covered with what look like boy scout merit badges.

The back of his scooter helmet has a bumper sticker that says “Ask me about anal fisting!”

Epitaphs for Corporate Persons

We had so much money
We built things no one wanted

We would shit in your hat
and call it a banquet.

We recognized people for years of service
right before we took them out and had them shot

Our people were our most valuable asset.
That line still gets a laugh.

The feast was spread before us.
Why didn’t we let everybody eat?
