The Meaninglessness of Work

There is a reason you are
sitting alone in a cubicle all day

sewing your shorts to your shoes
or making bits of electronic string and paper

into advertisements for dog food
or moistened baby wipes

or entering data about people
who broke their cars

while looking at a pretty girl
on the street wearing sandals.

Think of it as an ancient
and venerable koan.

The harder you work,
the more you strive,

the more meaningless
it will become.
